Frosty hittin’ form up North.
The Sucrogen Townsville 400 is the last chance to get your V8 Supercar fix before it goes into nine weeks of hibernation. All of the teams will be vying to finish the first half of the 2010 season on a good note at Townsville, which will provide some exciting racing for the fans.
Ford Performance Racing had pretty much been written off in the lead up to Darwin but after Mark Winterbottom won the first race of the year for the team at the Top End, things are looking up. Not only has Frosty cracked his first win of the year but in the lead up to Townsville Frosty took part in Ford’s celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Falcon model and 85 years of production in Australia so he is keen to win for the Blue Oval in Far North Queensland. Fellow Ford driver James Courtney is the one to watch out for at the street circuit, as he will be keen to extend his Championship lead and win at the track he performed at magnificently last year.

But TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup, who closed Courtney’s Championship lead to a mere 57 points, has been working on his fitness to ensure he is ship shape for Townsville. He has made no secret of this, however the team is holding a secret party on the Thursday night before the racing starts. Fans who visit the team’s website and RSVP to the party will receive a text message on the day advising them where it will be held – sounds intriguing! It was no surprise that J-Dub won the Sunday race at Darwin in a brand new car however the same, unfortunately, could not be said for Garth Tander and he will also be looking to get runs on the board at Townsville.
The Toll Holden Racing Team driver is likely to be paired up with Cam McConville at this year’s enduros but McConville will drive for a different team in Far North Queensland. McConville replaces Daniel Gaunt in the Gulf Western Oil Commodore, giving him McConkers the chance to get some more V8 miles in before the long distance races. Tander has his eye on the Townsville prize, but he is still taking the time out to make a couple of appearances.
He will hit the Woolcock St Red Rooster on Wednesday, July 7 from 5pm to 6pm before heading to a XXXX function from 7pm to 8pm at the Cowboys Leagues Club at 335 Flinders Mall. So if you’re in Townsville and want to get your V8 party started early, head down and say g’day to GT.
